Blog #2-Michael Erard

Erard stated, “In both cases, these metaphors are meant to help people to understand the unfamiliar. They aren’t supposed to make someone remark: ‘That’s beautiful.’ They’re meant to make someone realize that they’ve only been looking at one side of a thing.” I agree with this statement because this shows us how to see things in a different way. It can enhance our thinking skills and change how we think. It can also help resolve people’s problems. Metaphors give people the opportunity to understand and grasp onto something. To me, it sort of symbolizes as hope and guidance. Erard explained how some types of metaphors can actually change how people think quickly. He did an experiment with his colleagues and tested on a set of candidate metaphors on the streets. This sparked my attention because they gave those people a metaphor following up the question they asked them and it made them have a different insight. Erard said “Now they were walking down the street together, and the metaphor was showing them things. That’s how we knew what we were doing with metaphors was working.” It creates new experiences, which makes us think differently about how we see the world. I never really knew how something like metaphors help a person in contrasting ways.
