Blog #9-Strawson

While reading Galen’s argument about the idea of Narratives and a life story, I was sometimes confused as to where the argument was going throughout the article. Some of the points he made that I understood more were interesting and words I agreed and disagreed with. He mentioned the American novelist John Updike who stated, “Each moment I feel as if I’ve just been born/Into an endlessly new world.’ Some will immediately understand this. Others will be puzzled, and perhaps skeptical. The general lesson is of human difference”(Strawson 3). There’s been moments in my life where specific moments which were memorable and will stay with me until the end of my life. Some moments that happened in my life gave me clarity, a lesson, or advice in someway. I was puzzled when Galen quoted, “Life simply never assumes a story-like shape for us. And neither, from a moral point of view should it”(Strawson 2). I didn’t really know what he was trying to get at, like stories in movies or tv shows? Stories we tell just in general? He mentioned how we have many selves. I personally don’t believe I have many selves, I have personality traits that makes the person I am today. We experience life experiences which turn into stories that we retell to people. Even though my life story has made me not want to do some things, it also showed me the positive sides of things and to keep moving on in life. Some people might not see that their life is basically a story, but that’s how I perceive it. Others may not see it the same way, but it depends on who the person and how they want to view their life.
